SS MICHAEL & GEORGE RC CHURCH LYME REGIS
RESTORATION UPDATE 31ST AUGUST 2020
There has been quite a lot of progress in the efforts by the Parish to raise funds and obtain consents for restoration works to the Church, Bell Tower and Presbytery.
The architects/conservation specialists, Philip Hughes & Associates appointed by the Parish prepared an outline schedule of works required, drawings and photographs which were submitted at the end of July to the Historic Churches Committee for consent to carry out the works. The Faculty (as the consent is called) is expected towards the end of September and meanwhile is going through the consultation and advertising process. You may have seen the Notice in the Bridport & Lyme Regis News of the 20th August or the Public Notices outside LR & Axminster Churches.
We have already received confirmation of grants amounting to £11,549 from Dorset Historic Churches, Llewellyn Edwards Bell Trust, Charlotte Marshall Charitable Trust & Axe Vale Show Committee. An application has been submitted through the Diocese for a grant from Historic England, which could amount to 80% of the costs (if we are extremely lucky!) and an application to the National Churches trust is under preparation. Should these applications come to fruition for the amounts requested then, with the £31,000 which the Parish has raised, we should have enough to proceed. SO, FINGERS CROSSED!
Meanwhile, the Parish Social sub-committee are looking at three or four social events over the coming 12 months in order to meet the Parish target of £50,000. These will comply with Covid-19 restrictions and include, for example, a Christmas Draw. The events will be notified in due course. PLEASE SUPPORT THEM!
The Lyme Regis Group under the chairmanship of Matt Tompkins is looking at ways to raise funds through, for example, the promotion of visitors, donations from visitors, the letting of The Old School Room for meetings. It is also intended to have a display at the Church showing the progress of fundraising. If there is any parishioner, particularly from the LR congregation, who would be interested in assisting the Group, please let me have your name, telephone number and email address and I shall pass them on to Matt. My contact details are given below.
RIDE & STRIDE EVENT Saturday 12th September 2020
The Parish has received a generous grant offer of £10,000 from Dorset Historic Churches Trust which itself relies on funding raised through various event. In recognition of the help the Parish has offered to assist the Trust with a “RIDE & STRIDE” event being held on SATURDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER at LR Church. In general terms, those wishing to participate obtain sponsors for visiting various churches in Dorset and have their attendance forms signed off at each church. The proceeds of sponsorship go to the DHCT. Claire Peters, the parish secretary is organising it so far as LR is concerned and if you would like more information, please contact her by email on firstname.lastname@example.org or on 01297 32135. More information on the Three Parishes website.
